ED307Partnering Pedagogy: Team-Based Learning

 Team-Based Learning

I investigated Team-Based Learning and thoroughly enjoyed it. In my investigation of TBL, I discovered that the team-based approach was developed by a professor named, Larry Michaelsen in the 1980s.

Team-Based Learning (TBL), with peer interactions at its instructional core, provides unique opportunities for direct observation of professional behaviors. We developed a novel assessment strategy using paired self- and peer-assessments of professional behaviors observed during TBL sessions. Proof-of-concept was completed in 2015. The current project gathers valid evidence on the ability to provide early detection of students with at-risk behaviors.

That TBL provides an active, structured form of small-group learning, that can be applied to large classes. Students show accountability as achieved through the specific steps of TBL, including, pre-class preparation, readiness assurance testing, problem-solving activities, and immediate feedback.

Globally, a growing number of healthcare faculties have adopted TBL in a variety of combinations, across diverse settings and content areas.

In my summation, team-based learning creates a combination of learning from others through sharing thoughts and ideas and causes students to interact with one another to solve complex problems.  Both of these tools and strategies are important for the way that we work and solve issues in the real world.

Large organizations have been using a team-based approach for years, as the military when devise and break large groups of soldiers into teams during training and field missions. even when a large team has 50 plus players on a team, they only use 11 players on the field at a time.  Each player has a significant and important role to play on the team and they large not only their position but the position of their teammates. This type of strategy is called cross-functional teams and is an approach that is used in corporate teams all across the world.

in conclusion, I think that team-based learning is a great strategy and teaching delivery system for all types of teaching and learning environments.  Teachers and students can and should expect that they will need to work together collaboratively as they challenge the traditional model of thinking individually to solve problems and come up with meaningful solutions to today's and tomorrow's pressing problems.
